Top Performers are People Too

My top three Hard Facts About Working with People are:

  1. They want an opportunity to contribute and make a difference.
  2. They want an opportunity to learn and develop.
  3. They want an opportunity to connect and belong.

I was reading Marshall Goldsmith’s blog this morning, and he challenges us about the risks of ignoring your top performers.

Worth a read not only because he agrees with me, but because he’s pointing to what makes top performers tick and come alive at work. Stoke these deep and powerful inner motivations, and these people will change the world for you.

On your side,

– Karl

“Worth a read … because he agrees with me.” Karl, you crack me up!

I certainly agree with your list of hard facts. My dad always says he wants to know others fully and be fully known–without being condemned. That’s the philosophy behind what you’ve made easily applicable.

We want to know and know others–to continue to learn and grow with their help.
We want to be know–to be heard, to know we are making contributions
We want to be accepted–to connect, to belong to something larger than ourselves.

    Man, that’s powerful stuff, Karl.

Marcus, I’m intrigued by this knowing and being known thread you see running through what I’ve been thinking of as separate categories for tapping into people’s internal motivations.
Thank you for the insight. I’ve got some thinking to do!
