Of the many voices telling you what you should be doing, how do you decide which ones to listen to?

That is the trick, isn’t it? I was reading a board book version of the seven habits of highly effective people to my three-year-old yesterday…. sick I know. But the book was free with a kids meal somewhere.
Anyway, it featured the habit of focusing on the most important thing. By that logic, knowing which voice to listen to is a matter of prioritizing what’s most important.
That doesn’t really answer the question so much as reframe it around goals and priorities. If what they’re tell me matches my priorities, then I pay close attention. If they are way out in left field with some pet project that they want me to be part of, I don’t pay as much attention.

I’m going to try reading the kid’s version of my books now. Maybe I’ll understand and apply more!
There’s just no escaping my responsibility as the final arbiter of what’s most important, is there? Shout as the voices might. Advocate for their own primacy, insist on their relative value, or demand to be taken seriously, they nonetheless cannot replace my free, responsible and therefore necessary choice. -
I used to just follow the one that seemed the easiest to accomplish. But lately I listen more and ask myself which will bring me closer to my goals – regardless of the effort.
So often I have to hush the voice that tells me one more chocolate break before digging in to the work I need to do.

Don’t do that! The chocolate voices are among the very few who are consistently our friends!
I like the simple question about what’s actually bringing you closer to your goals. Thanks Shannon.
