Preaching Cohort: A View from the Pew

Bold Enterprises Logo

Dear Preaching Friend,

I am forming a new coaching cohort for pastors that I think you’ll be interested in. In fact, I am hoping you will participate.

I Can’t Stay Away

The Word MilitantI just finished a fantastic and challenging book on preaching. It’s got me thinking and churning anew. I consider it a must-read for the preachers I know and care about. (The Word Militant: Preaching a Decentering Word by Walter Brueggemann.)

In light of my years at Fuller Seminary administering the Doctor of Ministry Program and teaching Preaching in Post-Modern Times, you know I believe it is always time to wrestle with the complex, changing and increasingly crucial ministry of preaching.

Immersed here at Bold Enterprises in the complex realities of the workplace, I am uniquely qualified to equip from the perspective of those listening in the pews. Hence the title, A View from the Pew.

You Are Invited

I am forming a coaching experience for a group of preachers who want to wrestle with some edge issues in their preaching ministries. For example:

  • Who’s listening? How might we take into account the fragmented and subjective framework through which we are being heard?
  • Who’s speaking? How might we take into account the many voices in any sermon: God, the Bible, you the preacher, the church power brokers, the spirits of the age?
  • What’s reality? How do we take into account the complex issues, relationships and systems that frame people’s daily perceptions and choices?

What’s Involved

Reflection. Weekly reflection questions based on the reading.
Discussion. Online discussions initiated by all involved.
Action. Develop personal learning goals and enact them in a new sermon series.

This will be a 13-week commitment. We will begin the third week of September with a break for the Christmas holidays.

This will be an online learning community. Learn at your own pace. Participate to the extent you are most comfortable.

The Investment

The financial investment to you is $299.

For $947, four private coaching sessions related to your sermon series are included. We will discuss: 1.) the biblical/theological underpinnings for your series’ intended purpose and goals, 2.) your understanding of your listeners’ relevant formation needs, 3.) your statement of self-understanding as a leader and its relation to your series, and 4.) one sermon presentation for communication effectiveness.

If you have colleagues that might be interested, please forward this invitation to them. I will gladly knock an additional $50 off your fee for each referral who joins the cohort.

I’m excited and looking forward to this experience.

On your side,

- Karl
